The growth of a viable national shipping industry depends upon the availability of trained and qualified manpower. This is only possible, through planned and well organized training facilities. Towards this end, a Vocational Training Centre for Seamen named SEAMEN TRAINING CENTRE (STC) is working in Karachi. This center is providing optimum training facilities to the candidates.
Seaman Courses in Pakistan
- To train Secondary School graduates (Matric pass) for a career in seafaring and employment on Merchant Marine Ships as General Purpose Rating III (GP-III)
- To conduct up-gradation and conversion courses for serving seafarers to enhance their professional knowledge for promotion and change of trade.
- To conduct pre-sea and post-sea ancillary courses under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Conventions on Standards of Training Certification and Watch-Keeping - 1978 (STCW 1978) for Officers and Ratings of the Merchant Navy.
- To conduct other short courses as and when required by the Shipping Industry, for enhancing the professional knowledge of Officers and Ratings of the Merchant Navy.
GP-III Courses From Seaman Training Centre Karachi
Applications normally are invited for admission in GP-III Course in Pakistan through advertisements in the national and local newspapers in March and August every year. The last date of receiving application forms and commencement of the course is given in the advertisement.
Eligibility for GP-III Courses in Pakistan
Candidates must fulfill the following conditions of eligibility:
- Have passed Secondary School Certificate (Matric) or equivalent
- Age between 18 to 25 years on date given in the advertisement
- Relaxation unto 30 years of age for bonafide seamen, who can produce evidence of sea service
- Male citizen of Pakistan with valid passport and NIC
- The institute may take pre-entry suitability test of the candidates to ascertain his fitness for course.
- The candidate must be medically fit as per fitness criteria given by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and/or Ports & Shipping Wing (Government of Pakistan).
TRAINING
Seaman Course Duration:
The duration of GP-III course is five months (excluding examination); i.e. from January to June and from July to December inclusive of all compulsory courses.
Facilities at Seaman Training Center Karachi:
The training facilities are available for 100 trainees. Up to 50 trainees can be accommodated as resident trainees in the STW dormitory. STW has modern training aids and equipment. The training facilities available are constantly reviewed and up-graded, in order to keep pace with the technological changes in the Merchant Navy and to meet the training requirements laid down by the IMO.

Boarding and Lodging at Seaman Training Center Karachi:
The trainees have the option to stay inside the complex on the terms and conditions decided by the Commandant and shall bear the expenses mentioned under the heading “BOARDING AND LODGING CHARGES”. Alternately they may make their own arrangement, privately outside Pakistan Marine Academy. Trainees staying outside must ensure punctuality. Pakistan Marine Academy does not provide any transport facility to the trainees.
Those who wish to reside inside the Academy will be provided dormitory type,
Semi-furnished residential accommodation and served with meals. Following extra charges will be paid by the resident trainees.

In addition to the above charges, candidates are responsible to meet their private expenses for maintaining themselves. For reasons of security, the resident trainees will not be allowed to keep more than Rs.500/- with them at any time and rest of the money will be deposited in the PMA Branch of National Bank. STW staff will facilitate opening of personal accounts of the trainees in the said branch. Resident trainees will be responsible for safe custody of their personal effects.
